It seems to never fail that as soon as my husband leaves the general vicinity overnight or on a long trip weird and crazy things happen to me, the kids, or the dog.
I have been sprayed by skunks while trying to convince our 70 lb. Retriever that skunks are not cats and do not want to be played with. I am sure she thought they were weird looking cats by the way she was playing but the momma skunk was having none of that mess. So, off to a tomato juice bath the dog and I went. For all those wondering, tomato juice does nothing for the smell! Nothing! You will only have a shower that looks like it was a scene for a Stephen King movie.
The same week of the skunk episode, I was at the gas station putting gas in the car to take the kids to meet friends at a park across town and the hose to the gas pump split and sprayed gas all over me. I now look for the gas shut off button at gas stations.
I have given the Heimlich to the same dog that lead me to the family of skunks. She choked on a chicken strip. Funny now but at the time scary, she couldn't breath and would fall over if she tried to stand. So with all my kids at the table, I scoop up the dog with my arms under her front paws and run her over to the neighbors house. There is just something hilarious to me as I picture myself running a 70 lb dog down the road to my neighbors. However, while running, the jarring motion dislodged the chicken strip and my neighbor was kind enough to act concern though the dog showed no signs of distress.
Another time when the hubby was out of the country, I had to one of the kids the Heimlich at Fatz but the staff there were so sweet and gave my son jello and a dessert on the house. However, we did manage to scare the group of old ladies next to us. This is the moment I was thankful for all those hours of foster parent training because I knew just what to do and did not freak out.
There are so many more stories but I will not bore you will all of them from my kids making poop slip-n-slides to breaking down with four kids in the van.
I only have one more day until the hubby gets home from his retreat (woo-hoo) and this trip for me and the kids has been uneventful and I am truly thankful for the lack of excitement.
